BYD Yangwang U9 Breaks Record: The 3,000 HP EV That Hits 472 KM/H

If you thought electric vehicles were just quiet city commuters, think again. The BYD Yangwang U9 has just smashed its way into the record books, clocking an eye-watering 472.41 km/h (293 mph) on Germany’s ATP test track. That’s nearly Bugatti territory, except this beast doesn’t guzzle gasoline it runs on electrons. With over 3,000 horsepower, a 1.2 kV powertrain, and the ability to sprint close to 300 mph, BYD has officially redefined what it means to drive an EV supercar.

The Rise of BYD’s Electric Supercar

When BYD first unveiled the Yangwang U9 earlier this year, many assumed it was just a flashy entry into the luxury EV market. But BYD wasn’t messing around.

  • Standard U9: Comes with four 240 kW motors, offering a combined 1,288 HP. Priced at around $235,000, it’s already half the price of a Ferrari SF90.
  • Track Edition U9: Packs an insane 3,000+ HP from four next-gen motors spinning at 32,000 RPM, powered by a revolutionary 1,200 V system.

“This marks the first time a Chinese domestic brand has achieved a world record in this field,” BYD proudly stated.

Breaking Down the Record Run

The record-breaking test was piloted by race driver Marc Basseng on a closed straight at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg track in Germany.

  • Top Speed: 472.41 km/h (293 mph)
  • Battery: 80 kWh LFP pack (smaller than most Teslas!)
  • Charging Speed: Up to 500 kW
  • Power-to-Weight Ratio: 1,217 Ps per ton—currently the best in the world

This is a staggering achievement considering the Rimac Nevera R, which costs a jaw-dropping $2.7 million, “only” tops out at 268 mph.

Why Germany?

BYD’s decision to set the record in Germany wasn’t random. Europe is the biggest overseas target for Chinese EV makers, and Germany home to Porsche, Audi, and BMW is symbolic ground. Beating the speed records in the heartland of performance cars sends a loud message: Chinese EVs aren’t just catching up, they’re leading.

Supercars Are Changing Forever

This milestone isn’t just about bragging rights. It signals a shift in how we think about speed, luxury, and sustainability:

  1. Performance Redefined: Electric cars can now rival (and even beat) the likes of Bugatti, Ferrari, and Lamborghini.
  2. Affordability: The U9 costs around $233,000 expensive, yes, but far cheaper than ICE hypercars with similar performance.
  3. Technology Showcase: A 1.2 kV platform with advanced thermal management is something we’ll likely see trickle down to future mainstream EVs.

Competitors Already Feeling the Heat

BYD isn’t alone in the race. Xiaomi has teased its YU7 Ultra, slated for 2027, while Tesla fans still await the Roadster 2, which has been “coming soon” for years. But right now, BYD has the crown.

The BYD Yangwang U9 Track Edition isn’t just a car – it’s a statement. At nearly 300 mph, it shows the world that EVs aren’t the future anymore—they’re the present. Whether you’re a speed junkie, a tech nerd, or just someone tired of gas prices, this story is proof that the automotive world is shifting gears faster than ever.
